The castle of Warkworth stands on a hill near the Coquet River, approximately a mile from the river's entrance to the North Sea. The castle and moat cover nearly six acres of ground. The castle is a splendid 12th century stone motte and bailey fortress, with an eight-towered keep. The large bailey is enclosed by a curtain wall that is now crumbling, with a 13th century tower at each end.
